Privacy Policy
Last updated July 22, 2026
Onyx is built privacy-first. This policy explains, in plain language, what happens to your data when you use the Onyx iOS app (the "App"). The short version: your habit data stays on your device, we don't run servers that hold it, and we don't track you.
The short version
- No account. You don't sign up, log in, or give us an email to use Onyx.
- No tracking. No analytics SDKs, no advertising, no third-party trackers, no cross-app or cross-site tracking of any kind.
- No servers of ours. We operate no backend that receives or stores your habit data. We cannot see your habits.
- On-device storage. Your data lives in the App's local database on your iPhone.
- iCloud sync, on by default. Your data syncs to your own private iCloud account — under your control in iOS Settings, and never to us.
What data Onyx stores
Onyx stores the information you create in the App so it can show you your habits and progress. This includes:
- Your habits (names, colors, reminder settings, and related preferences).
- Your completions — which habits you marked done, and when.
- Second chances and planned breaks you record.
- An optional profile, including a display name and profile photo, if you choose to add them.
- Your app settings (such as your chosen accent and app icon).
This data is stored locally on your device. We, the developer, do not receive a copy of it.
iCloud sync
Onyx syncs through Apple's CloudKit so your habits stay consistent across your Apple devices. Sync is enabled by default. When it is active, the data listed above — including your habits, completions, second chances, breaks, and your profile (display name and profile photo) — is stored in your own private iCloud account, governed by Apple's Privacy Policy.
This sync is device-to-iCloud only. Your data is never sent to Faint Signal (the maker of Onyx) or to any third party. The App has no sync switch of its own: you control iCloud sync from your device's system Settings, under your Apple ID → iCloud → Apps Using iCloud. Turning Onyx off there keeps your data on-device only.
Notifications
If you enable habit reminders, Onyx schedules local notifications on your device. These are generated and delivered on-device and are not routed through a server we operate.
Exporting and importing your data
Onyx lets you export your habits and history to a CSV file. When you export, the file is created on your device and shared only where you choose to send it (for example, to Files, Mail, or another app). That sharing is entirely under your control.
You can also import a CSV back into Onyx. The file you choose is read on your device and merged into your local data; it is not uploaded to us.
Purchases and subscriptions
Onyx Premium is sold as a subscription or a one-time lifetime purchase through Apple's App Store (StoreKit). Payments are processed by Apple, not by us. We do not receive or store your payment information, credit-card details, or Apple ID. Apple provides us with anonymized, aggregate sales and subscription reporting that does not identify you.
Children's privacy
Onyx is a general-audience productivity app and is not directed at children under 13. Because Onyx collects no personal information on our servers, we do not knowingly collect data from children.
Data retention and deletion
Because your data lives on your device (and, unless you turn sync off, in your own iCloud), you are in control of retention. Deleting a habit removes it in the App. Deleting the App removes its local data from that device. To remove synced data, disable iCloud sync and delete the App's iCloud data from your Apple ID settings. If you'd like help, contact us at the address below.
Your rights
Privacy laws such as the GDPR and CCPA grant rights to access, correct, or delete personal data that a company holds about you. Because Onyx does not collect or store your personal data on our servers, we hold nothing to retrieve or delete on your behalf — your data is already in your hands, on your device and in your own iCloud. If you have questions about your rights, reach out and we'll help.
Changes to this policy
If we change how Onyx handles data, we'll update this page and revise the "last updated" date above. Material changes will be reflected here before they take effect in the App.
